Using Insurance Benefits

I don't bill insurance companies directly, but if your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you may be able to get reimbursed for some of the cost of therapy.

To make this process seamless, I partner with Thrizer, a platform that manages out-of-network claims for you and handles:

  • Automatic Claims Processing: Thrizer submits claims directly to your insurance company on your behalf so you don't have to deal with paperwork or manual superbills.

  • Seamless Reimbursement: If eligible, you get reimbursed for therapy services on a regular basis, without having to communicate directly with your insurance company yourself.

  • Pay Only Your Coinsurance: Depending on your plan, Thrizer can allow you to pay only your estimated co-insurance amount out-of-pocket at the time of your session, rather than paying the full fee upfront and waiting weeks for reimbursement.

  • Instant Benefit Verification: You can check your out-of-network coverage and estimated reimbursement rate instantly before we start working together.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a receipt provided by an out-of-network healthcare provider (like a therapist, specialist, or private-pay doctor) that you submit to your health insurance company to get reimbursed.

If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, the insurance company reimburses you directly based on your plan's coverage rate.

With Thrizer, you don't  have to handle any paperwork. I'll simply sign you up, send them confirmation of all sessions we have, and they will handle paperwork and make sure you get reimbursed.

Insurance requires a mental health diagnosis, even when someone is simply seeking support for growth, stress, or relationship concerns. Most plans don't cover couples therapy. In addition, insurance companies often audit sessions, request detailed treatment records, limit the number of sessions, and issue clawbacks (demand repayment months later), which can disrupt care.

More broadly, insurance companies are large corporations whose primary obligation is to shareholders, which can create pressure to minimize costs rather than prioritize individualized care. If insurance companies move toward models that genuinely prioritize patient wellbeing, privacy, and clinical autonomy, I would welcome the opportunity to participate more directly. In the meantime, I use services that help you access your out-of-network benefits so therapy remains as affordable as possible.

Remaining out-of-network allows me to focus fully on your treatment rather than insurance restrictions, while still helping you use your benefits when possible.

Why don't I accept insurance?
