Mental Health Therapy & Support for Peyronie's Disease in Baton Rouge, LA
The Unspoken Mental Health Toll of Peyronie’s Disease
If you’ve been dealing with Peyronie’s disease, you’re likely already well aware of the toll this condition takes on your mental health. Worries about what your partner will think, fear that it will prevent you from finding a relationship, constantly checking for new physical changes, and feelings of hopelessness about future intimacy — these are just a few of the struggles men face.
You don’t have to navigate this alone.
Why Coping with Peyronie's Disease is so Difficult
The answer to that is obvious. Your penis isn't working properly, and you're likely terrified that it's going to get worse. Not many situations can annihilate a person's optimism about the future quite so fast.
To top it all off, treatment options are shit. And I mean it. Stats on the effectiveness of many methods of treatment are lackluster, and none of them are pleasant experiences.
Penile traction therapy can be relatively effective, but you're basically wearing a medieval torture device on your penis daily. Xiaflex, the only FDA approved injection, is fairly effective. But once again, the word torture comes to mind.
Peyronie's Disease & Psychological Wellness
Peyronie’s disease is a condition involving scar tissue in the penis that can lead to curvature, painful erections, and - in extreme cases - bending or "hourglassing" so extreme that sex is negatively impacted or sometimes not possible. While the physical aspects are often discussed medically, the emotional side is less commonly addressed and often ignored by doctors.
Men often report:
-
Anxiety around sex or performance
-
Fear of rejection or being “less than” in relationships
-
Embarrassment or shame discussing the condition
-
Avoidance of intimacy
-
Obsessively checking for progression of symptoms
-
Worry about long-term identity or masculinity
-
A sense of loss that is hard to name
Some of these experiences overlap with broader patterns seen in men’s mental health struggles, especially when emotional processing, identity, and vulnerability become difficult to navigate.
Peyronie’s doesn't always just affect one person. If you're in a relationship, couples therapy offers a neutral, supportive space to rebuild open communication, clear up misunderstandings, and maintain closeness during medical uncertainty.
Research is Clear: Men with Peyronie's Disease struggle psychologically
Despite this, I find myself continually frustrated as a therapist by the lack of research into the psychological side of this diagnosis, specifically research on what forms of mental health therapy are effective for helping men to overcome the psychological challenges associated with Peyronie's.
It is my belief that the reason there's so little research into quality, specialized mental health support for those with Peyronies is the same reason that treatment options for the diagnosis are kinda shit.
Most men with Peyronie's Disease aren't talking about it. They're too ashamed or embarassed. If you asked 10 random people on the street if they've heard of Peyronie's, 9/10 would say no. However, research indicates 3-10% of men struggle with Peyronie's.
And many researchers estimate that number is closer to 15% or more, since most men never report the condition due to shame or embarrassment.

Does Talk Therapy Help with Peyronie's Disease?
In my opinion, this is not a condition that has been extensively studied in psychotherapy research specifically. However, there are related areas of clinical work—such as chronic health conditions, sexual health anxiety, and identity-related distress—that I believe are likely helpful for Peyronie's. This is an area of research I hope to do in the future.
Types of psychotherapy that may be helpful for treating Peyronie's Disease
Existential therapy for Peyronie's:
Peyronie’s disease doesn't just change your body, it hits at the foundation of your identity, your confidence, and your idea of the future. Existential therapy goes beyond generic coping scripts to help you address the real psychological weight of this condition.
-
Rebuilding Your Identity: Disentangling your self-worth and masculinity from physical performance so you stop feeling broken.
-
Processing Grief & Loss: Giving you a direct, unfiltered space to process the frustration and loss of how your body used to function.
-
Overcoming Isolation & Shame: Breaking through the silence so you stop pulling away from your partner and rebuild real connection.
-
Reclaiming Agency: Shifting your mindset from feeling helpless about a medical diagnosis to taking active control of your life and relationships.
You cannot always control physical changes, but you can control how you respond to them. Therapy helps you move past daily panic and build a grounded sense of self that isn't defined by your penis.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) may reduce anxiety associated with Peyronie's Disease:
How ERP Helps You Stop the Cycle of Body-Checking and Panic
When dealing with Peyronie’s disease, anxiety often drives you to constantly check your body, measure changes, or compulsively search for answers online. It feels like you’re staying ahead of the problem, but this constant checking actually feeds the panic—keeping your brain on high alert and convincing you that every minor shift is an active emergency. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) gives you practical tools to break that exhausting daily loop.
-
Ending Hyper-Vigilance: Breaking the habit of constantly inspecting, measuring, or testing your body to see if the condition has changed or worsened.
-
Managing Escalating Panic: Learning how to sit with moments of sudden anxiety or uncertainty about your future without letting the panic spiral out of control.
-
Reducing Avoidance: Stopping the pattern of pulling away from dating, physical touch, or conversations about intimacy out of fear of how your body will perform.
-
Building Psychological Tolerance: Training your mind to handle uncertainty so thoughts about your body stop hijacking your entire day.
You can’t always stop anxious thoughts from popping into your head, but ERP helps you stop giving them power so you can take your life back.
Couples Therapy can help with Peyronie's Disease:
If you're in a committed relationship and you have Peyronie's, then you likely face some unique challenges and actually have some advantages. The good news is that you don't have to go through this alone, and relational support from a loved one can be a protective factor for your mental health.
However, Peyronie’s doesn’t just affect you in isolation, it directly impacts your partnership. Tackling Peyronie's as a team and learning to give one another reassurance, find comfort in one another, respond appropriately to awkward or uncomfortable moments during intimacy, and possibly even exploring alternative methods of intimacy are some of the common areas I focus on in couples therapy for Peyronie's.
Couples counseling gives you both a safe, structured space to take the pressure off performance and learn how to comfortably, directly talk about sex and physical intimacy again.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Many men wait until things feel unmanageable before talking about it. Others never talk about it at all.
If you are noticing that this is affecting your confidence, your relationships, or how you see yourself, therapy can be a place to slow things down and make sense of what you’re experiencing—without judgment.
